I have a soft body. So what?

No matter how proud I am of my fitness achievements, there’s always someone that will say “Not to be rude but why is Cassey still fat after all these years of working out? She looks bulky and has rolls.”

I’m not writing this so you can tell me to “ignore the haters” because I don’t think this person is a hater. I think this person is genuinely asking why I’m not stick thin or ultra muscly like all the other trainers out there. And the truth is, I ask myself this all the time. If most people did what I did workout wise and eating wise, they would probably be stick thin or ultra muscly.

But not me. I have a soft body.

But I’m accepting that because my body is so much more than a loud billboard. My body is a novel with an intricate story.

I’ve been there – skinny and toned. But I was miserable. I could not function at my optimal levels in other areas of my life. So today, I choose to be happy with this body while being happy with the all the other cool things I’m getting to accomplish in business, relationships and creativity. My body is so much more than how it looks. I love my body for what it CAN DO.

And for anyone thinking that I’m making an excuse for my soft body, NOPE. I’m still working everyday to get stronger. My body is simply a result of the work, not the goal…and hey, nothing’s over til I die, so I’ll keep trying new things until that day comes!

Please remember that EVERY BODY IS DIFFERENT! There is no one right way to lose fat or gain muscle. We’re all formulated differently. It’s in our genes! So each of our prescriptions for diet and exercise will be different.

What I can say though is that I don’t count calories anymore and I surely don’t spend more than an hour working out a day. Sometimes it’s only 28 minutes! And I FEEL. GOOD. POWERFUL. UNSTOPPABLE.

    everyone at my school call me a “cereal” box and I don’t know why, I always take it personal and get super sad and just hate my body because of it, that all guys want is a girl with hips and a big butt, and the other “flat” girls get called cereal boxes.

      Maya, don’t let anybody make you ashamed off your body. Your body is ultimately built to be functional. It’s up to you to make it as strong and healthy as you would like, but it has nothing to do with what other people think. Everybody is different, and you should focus on being your best “you.” I’m sure you’re beautiful just the way you are.

    I started doing your workouts because of your “soft body”. At a time I was scared that if I started working out regularly, I would end up looking like those other fittness gurus. I started doing your workouts because I wanted a nice, feminine body like yours, and then I learned from you that there is no “end result body”, just the body you have that you can make fitter and healthier.

    Hi Cassey and all the comments people! I keep commenting on these posts because they often bring up things that affect or have affected me too. I’ve never had a “rock hard” body. Even when I was my thinnest I had a “soft” body. I also had absolutely no energy and could hardly function, I felt so deprived. It wasn’t healthly but during that time it seemed super important. It made me have a bad food relationship as well because I was so scared of weight gain.
    Anyway, Cassey looks ultra fit and healthy so people saying things like, “she has rolls,” must be on crack or some other mind-altering substance.

    scientifically speaking, MOST female bodies should have a layer of fat on them, being super shredded as a female isn’t so healthy for everyone, so like, being a bit soft is actually a good thing most of the time. American society is so warped, the fatphobia is so real that fit people like Cassey get called … fat?! what even…??

    I appreciate this blog post more than I can explain. I have had what I would consider my “ideal” body, but I was absolutely miserable having to pay such close attention to every little thing I put into my mouth. I noticed my behavior towards food was becoming unhealthy and making me unhappy, so I stopped. Since then I continue make healthy choices, am an active person, and despite my training, am a little soft. But I’m learning to love it because i know that underneath that fluff is strength and I’m much happier now than I was before!

It’s part of a more important conversation we should all be having: that a higher percentage of body fat compared to men is the cornerstone of women’s physiological health.     You look so beautiful!!! i just wanted to say this because hopefully i can cheer some people who were in the same position as me. Today was the first time i did extreme abs 3 in the past month or two, i haven’t been able to stick with the calendar because of my exams and sometimes i just felt like crying because i was in a situation where i was angry at myself for not exercising and at the end not revising cause that’s all i was thinking about. Today i couldn’t finish the workout, i felt annoyed that i let myself come to this state and to make matters worst my cousin told me i was weak and that pilates was easy yet he’s there sitting in the sofa playing a video game hahah. I asked him to exercise with me because he wants to lose weight yet he just watched.

    There are two lessons that i learnt today
    1) its okay if you cant do something that you could do straight away, it takes time to rebuild and you need to stay strong and realize that, that’s the real strength , don’t let it bring you down. “you never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.”
    2) don’t let other negative people bring you down and even if they do still be positive to them as mother teresa said: “Do good. Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.” I will still encourage him everyday to workout with me

    So everybody keep going!!!!

    I’m a long time lurker who finally decided to follow so I can post. I love how you say, “My body is simply a result of work, not the goal.” That really resonates with me. I’m having a hard time dealing with my current weight gain of 30 pounds, not being able to fit into my flight attendant uniform, and just being in an overall mental fog. I know proper nutrition is the right direction to go and exercise is just a small part of the equation. But that word… goal. A body goal. A dieting goal. It kind of turned on a light bulb for me to see things from a different perspective on how we judge ourselves and others so harshly. Thanks for posting.

And YES, there are some people out there that are naturally toned without even doing that much work, while people (like me) are struggling to tone up my stomach.     Women are suppose to be softer and less muscly than a man. As a 50 yo woman who has been stick thin and also overweight, I sometimes cringe at just how muscular so many women are nowadays. I’m not sure when or why the change to women needing to be “hard” bodied and less soft but I wish we could go back to the days when it was ok to be softer and stop making those of us who will never have the hard lines and muscle feel less than because of it.

    Love your strength, mind body and soul. Wish I had it. My body is veryyyy soft. I hardly build muscle and after 2 kids I’m more like fluff. I am struggling with GI issues and can’t seem to tolerate wheat and dairy well. Any suggestions how I cld build muscle. I don’t want to be bilk but I wld love to look tones and be tight. Just to tighten those jigglies. Oh and I’m anemic too. So I tire easily so I have do those 6 min videos u post. They have helped but I need more help.

    I have a soft body too, PLUS I just gave birth 7 weeks ago… and I get told by people I don’t know that I look awesome! I’m short and curvy. I have cellulite, and tummy rolls right now. But, that’s ok. Because I know that I’ll get to where I was 10 months ago, especially when I get back to work. I build tires for living so it won’t take long. Be happy while being healthy, and LOVE yourself, even your flaws.

    Amen, amen, amen!! I saw one of your older videos (Drive By inner thighs, I think?) and you were so skinny. You were beautiful, like you are now, but there was something different in the way that you looked in your eyes and how you moved your body, like something was missing. In your videos now you seem to have more peace and confidence. You seem happier. As a woman who has overcome an ED, had 2 children and is now 30, my body has gone through a lot of changes. I don’t have an interest in a rock hard body (for what purpose?!) but in FEELING good and being STRONG. With your videos, I’m encouraged to do just that. That’s what the goal should always be. Health and happiness all the way. I love your videos, attitude, outfits, confidence, and your strength is so inspiring.

    This is amazing, Cassey. I have followed you since the end of your bikini competition and have always believed your body tonbe beautiful no matter what size. In fact, I actually stuck with you because we have a similar body type. I’m very soft and shapely, can hold onto fat pretty easily, and more delicate joints and muscles on a smaller build. I find it so encouraging that someone like you can be such a successful fitness entrepreneur and not look too unrealistic either. Lots of love! 💗

    Hi Cassey, I have never commented any post but I needed to for this one! Thank you so much for writing it, I have actually talked about you to many people and I relate to you also because like you, I am strong and fit (not as much as you though haha) but I have a soft body! And I use you as an example to say: look, you can train as much as the girl next to you, but you’ll never have the same results, you’ll both look different, because EACH BODY IS DIFFERENT and reacts differently, so just focus on your body and love yourself. I have cellulite, big and rather unshaped calves, round thighs, but I know I am strong and powerful and fit and healthy AND HAPPY! I work hard to have the body (and mind!!) I have, but I do it because it makes ME feel good, not because I want to look like other people. And like you say, I love my body for what it can do and I am proud of it.

    Hey Cassey–you are an amazing woman. You are beautiful and confident, and genuine, and kind and always striving to find balance with becoming better and accepting where you are right now. I love that you share so much of your journey! This post makes me think of a recent experience at the gym. I was doing my thing at the gym and a guy approached me to offer a free training session. I thought, “Cool, why not?” Well, the workout was fine, but his whole philosophy was so off. Basically he seemed to think I had “genetics on working for me” and that all he would need to do was bring out such and such area of my body and take in this other such and such part blah blah blah. On top of that he seemed to believe that achieving that shape that I was apparently so close to having was more important than anything and anyone else in my life. What the heck? I can’t really describe it well but the experience was eye-opening. So many folks in the fitness world seem to get lost in the appearance of things. Our appearance is not the point. (not that it isn’t worth it to educate yourself on lining up types of fitness with your training and physique goals, if you have them) Oh man, I have been pondering on all this and more…Thank you, Cassey, for aiming to be so real. Truly, it is refreshing. You are one of those role models that doesn’t try to make everyone be like you. You want folks to figure out how to decide who they are and who they want to be. Fitness is a tool. Our bodies are an amazing and powerful tool (and a gift that each of us is given). But with these tools, there are so many different things we each can and want to do! OK, I will stop there for now. 🙂

    I’m in my 30s now and I think there has to come a point when you have to just accept the way your body is and ditch false expectations about how it is ‘supposed’ to look. Think about it – if you’re working out 5-6 times a week and eating well, you can’t really ask for better than that! Any more exercise or strictness with food would be extreme and unsustainable (you’ve said how you were unhappy when you did this). Everyone’s bodies are different – just look at the PIIT28 results photos people post on this forum. Everyone did the same workout, but nobody ended up with exactly the same body, because so much it is determined by your genes and that’s something you can’t change. So if you’re eating right and working out regularly then you shouldn’t beat yourself up, you should be proud of the body you’ve got from doing that. Don’t compare yourself to others! And Cassey – you look beautiful and I love your new hair colour! x

    You look great! I have 47cm shoulder width, more than any guy I know. If I wear loose clothes I look double the size of the lower body and I don’t care anymore. As you said, every body is different.

    Cassey, reading this truly touched my heart. At times, I feel so stuck- like my progress is too slow, almost like I am trying to swim in a pool of quick sand…when I watch your videos, I am so inspired and I am always in awe of how perfect you always look (even while doing plank jacks lol) I cant believe that there are people that exist out there somewhere that could feel so insecure within themselves that they would feel the need to type out a rude comment- I mean, to honestly take the time to hastily send those words and hit submit without a second thought.. It amazes me when I read your blogs and to hear how down to earth you are and how humble and human you are, especially in this plastic world that we are so used to nowadays. When I read the part where you told yourself- ‘If most people did what I did work out wise or eating wise they would be stick think or ultra muscly’ that completely described what I have been feeling for months now. Ive been following your videos and this months calendar is my second month that I have been completing, and before that I was doing other pilates workouts, (none as fun as yours!) And I was on a super strict low carb low cal diet… and it was like the scale wasn’t budging. I would watch your recipes on youtube and was so sad that I couldn’t try the meals because I was afraid of eating a banana.. and then I found an old video that you made about extreme dieting and how you were afraid of apples… since I saw that, it really awakened me. Since then, I have started eating my favorite fruits (I still stay away from breads and pasta, sugars, etc.) but I mean reaching my goal was becoming so obsessive. I was going down a scary path, where even things that I KNEW were good for my body, I was too afraid to have them.. You have taught me that this is a fitness journey… it’s not a race to a finish line- that has cake waiting for you behind the banner.. it is a life long adventure. I feel the best I ever have in my life.. I mean it. I am 26 now and feel more care free then when I was a teenager. Your advice on staying away from negative people has really helped me. Honestly Cassey, you have been an angel. Thank you so much for all that you do. You are such a beautiful person, inside and out… and I can see such a sincere warmth and glow from your eyes in these new videos. Just brilliance radiating off you and it is so contagious!

    I suppose that being skinny it’s different than being healthy. I understood it few years ago, when I was struggling with eating disorders. I was very skinny back then, but definitely NOT healthy (or cool, or sexy). I just think that you body is gorgeous, since it’s pretty clear how strong and beautiful it is at the same time. So those people who tell you that just need to riconsider their concept of healthy body!

    i’ve noticed on my college hockey team how much genetics plays the biggest role in what your body looks like. if you split us up based on who eats well and who doesn’t, you’d have toned, to big muscles, to muscular and chubby on both sides. but people still assume that fat on your body always means you’re unhealthy
    your blog keeps me in shape during the summer and working places i don’t usually work on in season, and it means a lot to me how much you love your body (which is perfect and beautiful, by the way). hopefully one day i can feel as positive about myself as you do, thank you for being a great role model <3

    Cassey, I never commented here but I feel I have to. I chose to follow your channel and buy PIIT exactly because you have the body you have. The super thin all muscle no softness type of trainers are extremely unappealing to me and they are definitely not what I want to be. You look like a healthy woman, a beautiful woman with the shapes and curves of a woman. For the life of me I can’t understand why women would want to look like sticks with broad shoulders and zero feminine shapes. I want a body like yours, strong and sexy. 🙂

    Wow. They must be crazy because you look great. I have had 2 kids. My last one was 11 lbs so I was stretched a little more than most ladies but I’m ok with my body now. I look at what I can do. I can complete your crazy workout videos 😂 And still be a mom and work part time. I was so proud of myself completing last months workout calendar. It was really hard but by the end of the month I was keeping up with you for all the rounds and not falling over dying at the end. I live on a farm aand we just put 10 tons of hay in our barn. No machines, just my husband and I. I may have a little squishy tummy but im stronger because of you.

    Love your answer, i followed all your videos and I still find myself soft, I don’t know why, i measured my body fat it is 23% (quite ideal for women) but why is my abs still flabby and soft.I thought by now i should have nice tight abs 🙁 I have been questioning myself, if I have done the workout right, if I should use some weights for the abs workout..

    Do i have to accept myself to have a soft body, or do I need to work harder on it? Hmmm….

    Their trolls, you are so gorgeous! And freaking skinnny, im 165 so i would probably be morbidly obese to these people. But i know im not, ive had 4 babies and i look great! I am not perfect, but i dont want to be either. I am comfortable with myself, and nobody can shame me. Hurt people, hurt people. And you know what those trolls have some serious mental issues, because saying mean things to people is all they can do to feel better about themselves. Its sad. You inspire me and your happiness is infectious!!!

    I am naturally very toned and have a large amount of muscle. Abs, definition in my arms and legs. I’m only 5’8 but weigh 160 pounds. At my absolute thinnest I was 155 and had literally no fat. I still don’t. I get asked every day by people what I do for my workout. I tell them blogilates of course! But most of it is just eating healthy, seldom eating out, and my natural build. I have a friend my exact same height. She was wayyyy more in shape than me- A GYMNAST who was offered collegiate level spots. She could do routines on bars balance beams, and pull ups galore. I still had more muscle than her. She weighed 135 pounds. And though way more fit than me, if you were to ask the average person who ‘looked’ more in shape, they would say me.
    Body types are body types are body types. I’d have to starve myself and chop off an arm in order to weigh 135 pounds. I love my body and could care less what the scale says as long as I feel healthy, and can maintain a great work out routine. Women need posts like this! Biology cannot be reversed and it’s good to see a trainer finally look healthy, normal, and not turn to unhealthy things just to look the part. Keep this up!

    I can not believe people call you fat…I just don’t see it. I see someone who is fit, loving, energetic, and intelligent. You are beautiful and such a great role model to so many people. I am so glad you do not listen to the people who say those things to you, and I am happy you are not super skinny and muscular. You show us that, like you say, every body is different and we should embrace ourselves for who we are. If others want to put us down, then so be it. They are not important.     Your body is beautiful. I think stick thin or super muscular is not feminine and not flattering (to me) I’m like you, a little “soft” as you put it. Which I prefer. As well as my guy. He likes a lil something to grab onto.

    Honestly I think that Cassey’s body is AMAZING and what is even more amazing and incredible is that she loves it and feels good in it. At the end of the day it’s not look that matters nor the size you are but the way you feel about yourself and with yourself and I believe that being healthy should be our main priority. It is more important to me to love my body, know what it can do and make it stronger every single day and Cassey helps me do that. I can kind of understand people who claim that ‘you cant really see all those years spent on working out’ but I feel like it’s an attitude of narrow-minded in this very matter people. There’s so much more to working on and with your body and for me one of the many pros is the way I started see and love myself. And I feel like that;s what it should be about 💛

    I love your attitude, Cassey – although I would never describe you as “soft” or “fat” – you look fabulous but more important than that is how you feel and your attitude!! I just started your June calendar and I’m having a lot of fun with it. I do need to modify and take breaks – but it is a fun and refreshing way to workout!! Thanks for putting together these great monthly calendars for us!

  72. This is honestly just what I needed to hear today. I really appreciate you being so real, being okay with where you are with your body, and you’re also your life. I struggle with perfectionism in almost every aspect of myself, and it’s starting to seep into my diet and exercise, which is something I enjoy but I’m starting to dread because of all these expectations to be perfect. I’m done with that! Thank you so much for this message, I appreciate you so much.

    Also Cassie, I am wondering if you’ve ever had to throw out smaller clothes and exchange them for larger clothes, and how you’ve overcome the negative feelings around that?

    I love this post so much. You are a fit and healthy young woman who promotes a balanced lifestyle and not fad diets or extreme unrealistic exercise routines and you are my number one role model for health and fitness. Your ‘soft’ body is basically my ‘goal’ body and I have a long way to go to get there! Using your workouts I can feel myself getting stronger and I actually enjoy working out which I think is more important than reaching any goal weight. You always focus on loving your body throughout the journey not just when you have your ‘dream’ body. Keep doing what you’re doing Cassey you’re an inspiration to so many people all around the world! x

    Maintaining body confidence as a woman is such a struggle. It feels like our bodies are constantly on display and up for critique. Your post made me think about how I need to be more active not because of how it can make my body look, but how it can make my body FEEL.

      I, too, must not be seeing what others are. Cassey is definitely fit. She has noticeable tone to her thighs, arms, legs, and a lifted butt. She is by no means “soft”.

      Being a professional, Cassey should ignore these people. The more she draws attention to these comments, the more people will comment.

  77. As someone who has had an eating disorder and who has recovered (and relapsed, and recovered, and so on) I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to see a post like this. I have a very short waist and a pear-shaped body. I have a pretty wide rib-cage with tiny girls too… and I’ve ALWAYS wondered what is wrong with my body? Why do I look so funny!?! But just like how you stated that you are “soft” (a beautiful word to use, by the way) I suppose you could say that I am “sturdy” (Like a cross between a pony and a tank! XD).

    While at times I still struggle to accept that, I am slowly learning that I am my own unique self… and that all on it’s own is a beautiful thing. ♥

      I just wanted to add that I think one of the reasons you’re so popular (other than your amazing workouts and bubbly enthusiasm, of course!) is because while you’re absolutely gorgeous, you also look like a real person. We can therefore project ourselves onto you and say, “Look what I can do if I try!” Whereas most fitness trainers look so insanely fit that no one except other extreme fitness people can ever imagine looking like that, so to us it’s a losing battle even trying to follow their workouts or diets or whatever.

    Omg earlier today I was thinking about how, although I’m thin and in shape, I still like being ‘soft and feminine’. I know you were making a slightly different point, but I just wanted to put that out there. You can be physically in shape but not have bulging muscles everywhere!
