Healthy Cheeseburger Ingredients (2 burgers):

– 4 oz lean beef

– 1/3 chopped red onion chopped

– 3 stalks celery chopped

– 4 portabella mushrooms

Directions:

  1. Roast your portabella mushrooms at 350F for 10-15 min until cooked.
  2. Mash beef, chopped onion, chopped celery, and Mrs. Dash into 2 patties and place on grill or pan. I used a George Forman Grill.

  4. Place your patty on the portabella bun with the cheese and veggies.
  5. Garnish with ketchup and mustard if you desire…and…

This is what you’ll come out with! How AMAZING does that look? If you don’t like mushrooms use lettuce leaves. Crispy iceberg works well!

Hope you have a fabulous Friday! Try this recipe this weekend! I know your fam and friends will appreciate!

<3 you so much,

Cassey

Soooo good!! My 6-year old who immediately turns her nose up at anything that could possibly be “healthy” actually ate it….without complaining 🙂 (minus the portabella bun–which I thought topped the whole experience off). I made the zucchini tots as a side, but will have to save them and re-crisp at another meal because I.am.full….

  2. Hilde says:

It was amazing!! It was ready in ten minutes and I enjoy it!
    Thnx Cassey

I have tried the burger today and the taste was amazing. I really loved that recipe. I love the idea that you can eat the things you want in more healthy way with less calories. 🙂

  4. Monica says:

I just made this and it was absolutely delicious! I put some cheese and a little bit of ketchup and then had a side of zucchini to go with it and it made a great filling dinner. Some of my burgers weren’t as meat filled as others and I just didn’t use a bun so I ate it with a fork and knife and it worked perfectly

  5. Ashley says:

These were incredible!!! I don’t care for celery so i substituted it with red pepper. Easily the best burger I’ve ever had!

    1. Tasha says:

I was fixing to leave a comment to ask what to use to substitute the celery! I love red pepper, great idea! I don’t think I could handle the mushrooms either. Any ideas for that? Obviously, I could just get whole wheat/grain buns, but I’d like to know other options if anyone can think of some!

      1. Ashley says:

I’ve actually seen tomatoes used for buns! You would just have the top and bottom of the tomato as the bun. 🙂 Also, I saw where baked eggplant could be used.

        1. Tasha says:

That is a good idea! I’ve never tried eggplant. I’ve wanted to, but always felt intimidated by the thoughts of trying to make it. I consider myself to be a natural newbie, so I’m slowly learning and gaining experience. Thanks for the info!

    This was incredible….

The mushrooms definitely need to be blotted dry, and def need to be cooked for 15 mins.

Also you’re kidding if you think this isn’t messy.

I thought 2 was going to be perfect… I was stuffed full by the first. SERIOUSLY perfect meal, sooo good!

  7. Michelle says:

These are awesome!!! Messy but awesome, in our home we dont prefer onions so i used green bell peppers and red bell peppers with celery. My 6 year old daughter said yum mmmhmmm mmmhmmm yum the entire time as she ate layer by layer. :D!!! we will be making these again !! Thanks for sharing reciepes. it helps on our journey to eat clean and health for life!!!

  8. Jessica says:

I love me some burgers and I LLLOOOVVEEE me some mushrooms! Thanks for the great idea!! 🙂

  9. Lindsay says:

Portobello mushrooms release a lot of liquid when cooked, to avoid a soggy “bun”, remove the gills underneath the cap prior to grilling.

  10. Danielle says:

This was so amazing. I just made it tonight and it was delicious. My only complaint…SUPER MESSY!!! So worth it though! 🙂

  11. freya says:

this was so much more filling than i thought it would be

  12. Joy says:

THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY DELISH. it was my first time roasting portobello mushrooms, and MAAAANNN are they tasty! I used turkey instead of lean beef. But I have beef in the fridge that I’ll be trying it with next!

  13. Cleo says:

Hey cassey I hate celery *ewww*! is there anything else i can use instead of celery i can use in the beef pattys?

  14. Sasha says:

I really want to try this!! But is there some sort of alternative to do in case you don’t like mushrooms?

  15. Lynne says:

    Hi Cassy,
I’m just wondering how many carbs are there in one hamburger (without cheese). I’m having to be on a low carb diet due to predicates.
    Thank you

  16. Maxx says:

I was wondering where is the nutrition information?

  17. Jamie says:

My mom has always made a version of this recipe, it’s so amazing!

  18. Ange says:

Making these tonight! SO excited 🙂

  19. Niki says:

I have to try this! I usually just make burgers with a 2 oz beef patty and a slice of cheese. However, I’ll have to use either lettuce or an actual burger bun instead of mushrooms due to what I assume to be a mushroom allergy. Thank you so much, Cassey!

  20. Sheeny says:

I just made these too and I was having the same problem with the mushrooms. They were dripping way to much. I gave up half way and just ate the patty with cheese and lettuce. The rest was really good though. Next time I’ll try this healthify bread everyone’s talking about. But I really love these healthy recipes that are actually filling! Thanks Cassey 😀

  21. Stella says:

The ending slow motion was my favourite part!! Lol xx

  22. Christine says:

I just made one! OMG they were so delicious!!!! The only problem was they were so hard to eat lol! The juice from the mushrooms and tomatoes were dripping everywhere and I dropped mustard and tomato sauce all over my jeans lol! Next time I’ll skip the tomatoes I think. Definitely making these again! 😀

  23. Those burgers look perfect. I love a burger with a bit substance about it!

  24. I love portobella mushrooms ON a burger, I’d never thought of doing it the other way around! Genius! This is a great way to eat a hamburger when you’re craving one but don’t want to make it your YOLO meal. I’ll be trying it out and reviewing it over on my blog soon for sure 😀

  25. Kristina says:

Cassey!! You should healthify garlic bread! I am making spaghetti squash this week and could use a great, healthy, Italian appetizer or side dish to pair with it!

  26. Jessica Jann says:

Awesome!! Love it…cant wait to try!! Thanks

  27. dilsah says:

Love the burger when they are tofu one hoyyyy less calories too and YEs I am a vegetarian LOL!!!

  28. Dani says:

I cannot say thank you enough for giving an alternative to the mushrooms!
When I originally saw the picture I immediatly thought, “Nooooo 🙁 I can’t eat mushrooms :(” and then I scroll and see the alternative you posted.
    Literally made my day hahaha!

Tried this an hour ago….aside from the part where I paid $11.00 for 4 portabella mushrooms, they weren’t bad! The biggest shock to me, is I couldn’t even finish my one burger (and I was starving) and yet, I’ve consumed less than 150 calories. So full right now!

  30. rachel says:

Oh, for some reason I just assumed these would be veggie and was so sad when they weren’t. Anybody have a great veggie burger recipe?

    1. Laura says:

Hi Rachel, you could still make this recipe. Instead of lean beef you could use TVP (textured vegetable protein). You can get soya mince which basically acts as the same thing. I use soya mince in spaghetti bolognese all the time, it should bind well with the other ingredients in this recipe (you’ll just need to either soak it first or if it’s frozen defrost it). Oh, but I would say add some seasonings in with the burger patty; salt, pepper, oregano, thyme, cilantro, etc, to give it a bit more flavor. Hope that helps! 😀

  31. Poppy knight says:

This was soooo good, tip: make a small indent in the center of the pattie and it makes a sooo much juicier. Healthify…. APPLE PIE OR CINNAMON BUNS!!

  32. Lang says:

That looks pretty delicious and healthy! I never thought that burgers and healthy could be in one sentence! This is great! I don’t need to give up on burgers anymore!

  33. Core says:

Thanks for always sharing these recipes with us! This looks amazing, I can’t wait to give it a try. Never would have thought of using portabella mushrooms as buns, I’ve been just omitting the bun when eating burgers. This is definitely a lot less boring.
