What I do for hair growth and glowing skin | Day 21 of 90
I couldn’t resist the urge. I ordered a scrunchy and OMG how cute is this!!??
Should I design some scrunchies for POPFLEX!? Maybe to match our next collection??!!! Vote in the comments!
Now…onto skincare and hair care…
I am so proud of my hair growth and the state of my skin. Over the past year, I’ve been paying a lot more attention to it and the work is paying off. For the first time ever in my life, people are actually complimenting my skin – something that used to be a huge source of insecurity for me.
As a teenager, I had lots of acne, and because I constantly picked at it, I had scars as I entered young adulthood. I continued that picking habit even after the acne went away and basically ended up with dark spots all over my face. In addition, I never had a skincare regimen. Like literally, I’d do a half makeup wipe at night and then maybe throw on some moisturizer before bed. Some Vaseline for the lips. No facials. No cleansing foams. No toner. No SPF. Nothing.
About a year ago, I decided that it might be a good idea to start washing my face – like, for real. I envied the smooth skin of the girls who could go foundation-less. It would save me so much time in the morning if I didn’t have to put on foundation, I thought. So I invested time in my skin health. So here’s what I do for my face everyday!
By the way, this is not a sponsored brand deal at all. Yes I am using affiliate links, so I’ll be rewarded a teeny amount if you happen to click on the link and buy something, but there’s nothing beyond that. These are all things I REALLY use. Some of the brands have sent me product in hopes of a shoutout (perks of being an “influencer”), but that’s not how things work around here. I’m not here to sell you stuff all day long. I’m here to teach you how to find the joy in working out while living your happiest and healthiest life! But for the purpose of this particular blog post, I know you guys will ask me what brands I use anyway, so this one’s gonna be a little different!
My Actual Skincare Routine
My process begins in the shower. I like the steam to soften my face and begin dissolving the makeup. Plus, it relaxes me and puts me in a good mood for skin care 🙂
#1. Step one: I do a Neutrogena makeup remover wipe for my entire face and eyes.#2. Step two: Then I take put a dollop of First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser…
#3. Step three: …and I put it on my spin brush! The one I use is the Vanity Planet Ultimate Skin Spa Facial Cleansing Brush. I spin the cleanser on my face for about a minute. I like doing this in the shower so I don’t have to worry about cleanup around my sink.
After my shower, I check my skin in the mirror and it is literally tight and shiny. It’s like I have a gloss all over my face. It’s kinda amazing. I stare at myself for a moment every night after this. I don’t know what it is with the brush but I think it really does take away dead skin cells or something because the shine is for real!
#4. Step four: I put on night cream. Currently, I am using Night Fix Enzyme Treatment by Murad. It feels light and smells really good. This makes my face feel really soft.
#5. Step five: I put Vaseline on my lips! This is something my mom taught me when I was a little girl. I’ve been doing this since FOREVER and it keeps my lips from being chapped.
#6. Step six: In the morning after I wash my face, I put on some Murad Perfecting Day Cream with SPF 30. I was told recently that if I don’t wear SPF during the day, my skin will get damaged and that my acne scars will darken. So I got scared and started using SPF moisturizer during the day and I think it’s been helping keep my skin even-toned.
I should also probably be using toner, eye creams, serums, and other things I don’t even know about yet, but give me time. This is a lot for a simple skincare girl like me! I love learning about ways I can better my skin health, so I’ll update you when I begin adding more elements to this current regimen!
#7. Step seven. This isn’t really a step 7. It’s more like an all day erry day thing. But I think the number one reason why my skin looks good is because of how hydrated I am and because of the type of food I’m eating. I drink enough water so that my pee is lime juice colored most of the time. And I eat a lot of vegetables. Oh and I’m taking collagen, which is supposed to help fill out wrinkles and increase the elasticity of my skin. More on collagen in the next section!
My Hair Growth Hack
Okay, I don’t have any scientific evidence to prove that this is the actual reason for the increase in my hair growth, BUT I believe it is because of the collagen I am taking! I’m taking it a few times a week (I just put it in my water), but seriously you guys – my hair was at neck length about 1.5 years ago and now it’s at mid back!
Normal collagen doesn’t have any flavor so you can just put it in your water. But, I started using this matcha collagen from Vimco Wellness and it’s honestly REALLY good. It tastes like matcha with a hint of sweetness.
The sad part is, they discontinued their matcha collagen line, so I’m trying to ask the owners to please reconsider! I love this stuff so much!
There you go! Hope this helps you guys in some way. What’s your skincare regimen?
DAY 20 RECAP:
My Fit Journal entry. Yesterday, I started to finally feel that KBBQ wear off! Yes, my digestive system is THAT SLOW. My stomach is feeling better now. Def not going to go to an all you can eat restaurant again for a while! 😛
I did a HIIT class at lunch time and got super sweaty. Didn’t have time to work out in the morning (which is my preference) but hey, you gotta get it in when you can get it in! I don’t really like non morning workouts anymore because I feel like it breaks up my flow. I’d rather start off hard so that the rest of the day feels easier.
Lunch was the ahi tuna salad from Tender Greens! Yes, again. This week has been crazy. No time to meal prep lunches.
Snack was pepperjack cheese with thai chili almonds. I think I’m going to start cutting out cheeses pretty soon from my diet. I think it’ll help me get out of my stall. But I gotta finish out what I bought first! Will NOT waste food!
Oh, not pictured but I also ate a ton of cashews and peanuts. I think – nah, I KNOW I’m overdoing it in the nut department. Must be more conscious!
For dinner I made shishito peppers with scallops and cauliflower rice. I also had this with coconut aminos and sriracha. Absolutely delish!
Post dinner, I wanted dessert so I dug into my keto ice cream. SO GOOD. I’m eating straight outta the tub. Probs not a good idea. But I’m too lazy to get a bowl. Tomorrow I’m pretty sure this will be gone. Haha.

Is the Night Fix Enzyme Treatment by Murad is available in Boxycharm or Ipsy?
The Drunk Elephant cosmetics seem designed for you Cassey, they’re fun, colorful, clean, cruelty free and most of all, really effective 🙂 I’m also a Paula’s Choice devotee but the Drunk Elephant is my N.1, if a bit on the pricey side.
I like Drunk Elephant products. I hear they have now released hair products. Can’t wait to try them.
Hi Cassey!!! Vital Proteins has a matcha collagen that you should try! I found a brand at Marshall’s that is pretty good, 306 Nutrition.
*360 not 306 hahaha
Yes for scrunchies!! Thank you Cassey for your skincare routine, I’ve been wanting to know about it for the longest time. I have the Vanity Planet Cleansing thing but haven’t used it yet since I don’t have the adequate cleanser. Maybe I’ll check the one you have. The night is hella pricey though.
(I’ve been using the Under Eye Elixir from there https://www.etsy.com/listing/219601794/under-eye-elixir-pomegranate-rose-hip for a few days now but I know that this is going to one of the best eye products I’ve ever bought. Yes it’s been a very short time so I can’t tell but to be frank I trust anything that’s natural)
Do you use the Dr. Organic Argan Oil Liquid gold or the serum for your hair?
Hi Cassey, maybe try the primal collagen of “primal state perforce gmbh”. Here’s their website: https://www.primal-state.de/shop/proteine/primal-collagen/ . It’s similar to the one you used to take 😉
I use to use Vasoline too in hopes it would hydrate my skin but I was told by healthcare specialists that Vasoline is actually drying to the skin because it contains petroleum. Now I use a lip balm with coconut oil, sunflower oil, and/castor oil. And it significantly helps. No more unnecessary chemicals 😊
I bought a cheap Walmart version of that cleansing brush after I read this, and I actually did notice a difference after using it, even with the $7 version.
SERIOUSLY!!! It is insane!!!
I thought you used bioClarity??
Have you looked into vital proteins collagen? I use it almost everyday and have definitely noticed a difference in my hair and nails.
Just bought it the other day!
Hi Casey! Nuts and dairy can stall weight loss and çause constipation and breakouts on the skin:) at least I’ve found this to be true for myself.
Ummm… speaking of glowing…I was wondering if you’ve ever considered prenatal workouts? I saw one that you did but I’m having to turn to other channels for my workouts. You’ll probably not see this comment but I miss working out with you. 😭 If not, see ya in 7 months!! I’ll be back!!
Wow congrats on the pregnancy! I mean…I will def do a series when I am pregnant!
I’m not getting pregnant anytime soon, but that would be super cool for a lot of people!
Consuming collagen is no different than eating chicken or beef as it is too large of a molecule to be absorbed in its original state.
In our stomach, enzymes break down the protein into short chains of the basic building block known as amino acids. By the time these broken down proteins reach the small intestines, they are typically 1-3 amino acid chains long. These small peptides are able to be moved out of the small intestines and into the blood stream.
Collagen is a triple helix (think three pearl necklaces wrapped together) protein that is typically 1400 amino acids long. That means it is too long to be absorbed at the small intestine and must be repeatedly chopped up by enzymes in the stomach so it can be absorbed. At this point it cannot be differentiated from other protein you ingested like chicken, beef, fish, tofu, lentils, beans, etc. If you eat a well balanced diet, the addition of collagen will have no effect.
Additionally the three most abundant amino acids in collagen are non-essential amino acids meaning that they can be synthesized in our body and we do not solely depend on ingesting them from our diet.
Read the same, that the collagen wouldn’t survive the digestion process. https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/health/a20707028/collagen-supplement-explainer/
How do I grow my limp dull hair
My skincare is also multistage, and I love it. This is my way to relax and escape from kids for a few minutes 😀
Cassey, could you talk a bit more about collagen? I have always wondered if it’s safe to consume collagen supplements. Regarding hair care, does over exercising cause hair fall?
I have never heard of exercising causing hair falling out? For me, it’s increased my rate of hair growth.
I would totally want to try your skin routine cause I have problem with mine, too, but Neutrogena isn’t cruelty free and I use only this kind of products.
Same I only use cruelty free brands as well
Not a food waster! Same here!😊👏But yeah eating a lot of nuts, wouldn’t that have some cons too? I mean like gout? Sorry to burst the bubble but just concerned here!😯
I’m definitely guilty about snacking on too many nuts. So I do try to pour them into a little 1/4 cup serving bowl so I know i’m eating the intended amount. My nut of choice is pistachio so i do have to work a little harder to stop and open each one, so it does slow me down a bit!
I’ve been following you for a long time and following this journey and I noticed that under every post there’s tons of suggestions (and I assume they come from a good place and good intentions). I think people recommended you everything from stricter Keto to veggie to IF, no dairy Keto etc…
And as dumb and obvious as it sounds – why don’t you just go to a professional dietitian and follow their plan created for your goal? Or order a catering option? We all have personal experiences but let’s face it – no one here is really educated to give nutritional advices. And good dietitian will take into account your general preferences while putting their knowledge, research and science into our diet plan …
I really only use toner and sunscreen, but love hearing about other methods. Oh also peanuts can cause some folks to bloat as they can be an inflammatory food. Maybe skip those and go for other nuts? 🙂
Your skin looks gorgeous! I’ve recently started to double down on my skin and hair, I’m kinda sick of those pesky insecurities so I’m making a change 🙂 I’ve never really used toner before either, but I’ve started using Witch Hazel as one every morning and night after I wash my face before I moisturize. I just put some on a towel and dab it all over my face, I feel like it helps tighten everything up and clean things up a bit more and I’ve noticed a big difference in my acne! I’ve also used the Trader Joe’s rose water toner, it doesn’t do too much to my acne but smells divine and makes me feel super refreshed! When I can I’ll make Aloe Vera masks using fresh aloe from a leave I just pick up at the grocery store. I usually see them for only $5 for a big leaf and it lasts me forever! Thank you so much for your advice, and I hope maybe I shared a couple things that might help! Keep being the beautiful, inspirational person you are, love ya girl! <3
Would so love to try out these beauty products, I’m brown skinned and Nigerian, but I’m not sure I’ll get them here 😦😢. O you look absolutely beautiful by the way
Scrunchy looks really cute on you 😍 You can also consider designing some headbands because a) they would look cool and b) I am really tired of my headphones popping out of my ears when I work out 🤦 I have to wrap my head with any scarf I find around, thankfully no one sees me with that since I work out alone in my room 😁
And YES, you are glowing! I am also very into skincare recently. My skin is very prone to dark spots, I don’t have many acnes but have a scar for each acne I’ve ever had. Moreover, when an area of my face dries then recovers, there is hyperpigmentation. I am getting really annoyed by it because I can’t resist covering them with makeup and find it very uncomfortable, too. That is why my skincare is all about good cleansing and wearing spf. Although I like simple routines more, I want to try serums or creams or chemical exfoliants for evening out skin color. I am still collecting reviews of them and collecting money to buy them 😅
I have such small ear holes, but I never thought of wrapping a headband around my ears to keep the buds in. Good idea!!
Cassey! I’m folowing you for a while and I know you are constanly struglling whith your weight, despite the fact that you have tried every diet ever. Well I know there is one diet that I bet you have never tried! 😀 It’s from book called: “The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in “Healthy” Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain”. It’s from Dr. Steven R Gundry MD who is a former cardiac surgeon. My mum is on this diet at the moment. Please, if you will have some time, look in to it. Especialy when you are considering trying a new diet. I think that more people that are reading this blog would be interested in new ways of eating.
Hey Cassey, Long time subscriber here. I would like to share some tips as I recently became a skincare fanatic lol. I’ve been watching Mixed Makeup and Beauty Within on YouTube ( i def recommend them). They are great skincare channels and I learned a lot during this past month! (Plus, they are also Asian ladies winning the Youtube game!) So, they recommend to NOT use makeup wipes as the first cleanser because the wipes drag your face and may cause wrinkles. Instead, opt in for an OIL cleanser or cleansing balm to take all the makeup off! And then use your First Aid Beauty cleanser as the second step. They say that you can still use makeup wipes but only for eye makeup removing or for any residue afterwards. As for toner, serum and other things, it really depends on your skin type and your skin problems. Also, I looked up Murad Night Fix Enzyme and turns out it is a serum actually! You are already using a serum and it seems like you don’t use a moisturizer, so I def recommend using one because it’s essential for hydrating and moisturizing and to bring your skin PH to the right level. Anyways, I don’t know if you’ll read this, but those two channels I mentioned above are GREAT resources! 🙂
Ha! See how much of a beginner I am! I don’t even know what I am using. Thanks for the tips. I will have a look at that channel!
Vaseline for the lips is where it’s at. In middle school one of my friends said that’s what they used and I started using it too. It’s the only thing that doesn’t make my lips feel dry after it wears off.
Old school!
My skin routine is long for both day and night, but I’ll on talk about what I put on during the day.
During the day I will wash my face with Tatcha The Deep Cleanse Exfoliating Cleanser. Next I will use the Tea Tree Water toner from Lush. For serums I use both Buffet multi-technology Peptide Serum from The Ordinary and the Pineapple-C Bright Serum from Glow Recipe. While I let the serums dry I’ll put on the Tatcha The Pearl Tinted Eye Illuminating Treatment under my eyes. For moisturizer I use the Tatcha The Water Cream (it’s so good). Next I’ll put on a lip scrub from Colourpop to Smooth my lips, and then put on chapstick. Lastly I put on SUPERGOOP! Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40.
how’s the The Ordinary Buffet? I’m curious! I use Vitamin C serum, but I also wanna use a different serum to target lines/wrinkles for preventive purposes. Thanks!
I “do” the 10 step korean skin care routine! I had a lot of acne scars and it has helped me A LOT!
Nice! I do the 7 or 8 step skin care routine and half of them are Korean products! It hasn’t even been a month yet, but I think it’s working so far. 🙂
I’ve started trying to take care of my skin more. I have two big issues: I pick nonstop, and I’ll go nights without washing off my make up. When I do take care I’ll wipe off my makeup with Neutrogena remover wipes, then follow up with a wash (GlamGlow atm). I’ve also got different toners from truffle to rose that I use every now and then. I’m going to have to try this lip Vaseline, I currently use Vaseline for my nostrils (prevents bloody noses). I’ve struggled with finding a good moisturizer that won’t break me out or won’t dry up immediately. I’ve got the oily dry combo skin. I’m mostly dry on my chin area and my nose is oily, that sort of deal.
Hell ya to scrunchies!
A skin care suggestion for you if you’re into it!
Last year I got hit with adult acne (the reason actually being that I developed PCOS). My skin is under control now, but I was left with some pretty dark marks from cystic pimples I would get on my chin.
My dermatologist prescribed me Tretinoin (Retin-A) 0.5%. It is a retinoid that powerfully exfoliates your skin using Vitamin A.
I’ve been using it for a year now and my dark spots are nearly completely non existent (and they were DARK red), my pores are super small, wrinkles in my forehead have filled in, and any random little white head I get disappears overnight.
With my insurance and prescription it costs me $10 bucks and the tube will definitely last you a year. If you can’t get it cheaply, though, the OTC version is Differin (they market it for acne but it’s really a retinoid the same as Tretinoin and can be used the same way to super exfoliate the face)
When you’re using a retinoid your skin care regimen becomes super simple too, because you don’t need any toners or other exfoliation. In fact it would really irritate your skin to be exfoliating on top of the exfoliation the Tretinoin is already doing.
I’d recommend searching for Dr. Dray’s videos on Retin-A on YouTube to learn more. She’s got so much information on skin care and is a dermatologist.
One last fun fact, retinoids and retinol are not the same thing. Retinol is essentially useless in helping scars or anti aging, retinoids on the other hand actually have years of science behind them to be effective.
Anyway! That’s just my experience. Your skin looks great and the most important thing is a routine you love and stick to!
I just started getting into skincare this year and I’ve had great results. I’m not perfect every day but I do a cleanser, toner, eye cream, serum, and a moisturizer. I love a nice mask too. I still need to be better about sunscreen. I read the spf in your moisturizer isn’t enough so you should actually just use a sunscreen product for your face. It’s all a work in progress. Anyway, I look forward to reading these every day.
Yes please make Popflex scrunchies♡
My skin is so oily and acne prone, and if I don’t keep a consistent routine (if I skip one or two days) I’ll start to break out
I love neogen exfoliating facial pads and soap stick in green tea. I love Murad especially the youth serum retinol. It actually worked within 24 hours!! Also Herbivore products are awesome!!! Laneige Sleeping mask is excellent as well… only $25.
OMGoodness absolutely yes to scrunchies! A cute hairtie (or headband for girls with shorter hair) totally completes a look. Also, it’s really hard to find ones sold near me that aren’t either super huge or small and blah.
My face cleared amazingly after cutting out coffee, which is super sad for me because I love coffee…but honestly, I had way more energy, no lunchtime lag, and my face got clearer….too many benefits to continue but I may treat coffee as a one time on the weekend treat or something, but definitely not an everyday thing anymore. I also have been making sure to wash my face every night and moisturize it with a night cream and I try to go makeup-less as often as I can with just a little dab of concealer if needed.
Hey Cassey! I highly recommend checking out a channel I recently discovered on YouTube. Autumn Bates! She is a nutritionist who breaks down and really emphasizes intermittent fasting to help with gut health, feeling energized, balance hormones, tackling FAT to use as energy, and to just better your overall well being WITHOUT COUNTING CALORIES. You mentioned before that you’re always down to try new methods so when I made the decision to start IF I immediately thought of you as well and just had to let you know about it too! Just wanted to share something I learned, of course you don’t have to do what you don’t think is suitable for you :).
I think shrunchies would be a great idea. Especially if you use fabric scraps from making your other clothing. That was you’re not creating as much waste with your manufacturing process. I’m sure it’s more complicated than it sounds, but I can assure you it would be worth it to be a little greener.
I mainly use Ivory soap on my face. I also use a face scrub once a week and a face mask once a week. I use a moisturizer that has spf 15 and a little tint to it daily. Very simple 2 step process.
Loved this post! First time commenting anywhere on anything of yours but I wanted to say that I have been LOVING your 90 day programme updates. I’m going through a similar programme and though I don’t have a ton to lose, I’m also trying to get rid of those last 5 pounds so it’s super useful to see someone else with a similar journey.
I think some people forget that it’s okay for women who don’t have masses of weight to lose to still want to get to a weight they’re happy with. Please keep doing what you’re doing Cassie – and don’t let the keyboard warriors get you down. Some people just *like* to be offended by everything. Your posts have never come across as anything other than positive, healthy and motivational – and I love them as a result!
I think the Popflex scrunchy is a no-brainer: of course! My skincare regimen is washing my face and applying toner. If it’s fall/winter time I will apply a few dabs of moisturizer. I try to clean my face with a spin brush every other day, but that doesn’t always happen. I also try to drink a lot of water and my skin suffers when I don’t (actually, my whole body suffers lol).
I need to be better with the toner! I have it but I don’t use it!
Same problem here 😀 I am 35 so I should be taking muuuuch more care of my skin. I will use this blog post as my motivation 🙂
What really helped me with little wrinkles was the La Roche Posay Hydraphase Serum, it was like a little miracle. But my skin is normal to dry, never had an acne, never used a foundation, so not sure how that would work for you. Thanks for the brush idea! I will wish for it for Christmas 🙂
Try putting it in a spray bottle, it’s so much easier to apply it as a mist instead of with a cotton pad and it’s more fun too 🙂
Weird that there is no Bioclairty or SKII on this list of faves. You’d think it would be since you heavily promoted them. But I guess everyone is a sellout when there is a wedding to pay for. Js…
